Animal Genetic Resources Department

Background

The Department of Animal Genetic Resources Conservation and Research was established as one of the ten technical Departments. In 2004, IBCR has been promoted to the IBC, with certain structural adjustments and little impact on its mandate.

The objectives of the Department of Animal Genetic Resources Conservation is to conserve and sustainably use domestic, wild and aquatic animal genetic resources that are of economic, cultural, ecological and scientific importance to the country. The Department has, presumably, been comprised of Domestic, Wild and Aquatic Animal Genetic Resources Programs, which are since then operational, but are not yet institutionalized. According to the then IBCR report, discharging responsibilities vested upon and mandates given to the Department requires upgrading of the Department into a Centre and the Programs into Departments level as well as equipping the Centre with appropriate structure and human resources along with necessary materials and facilities such as cryolaboratory.

Past Activities

1. The National Biodiversity Conservation Policy in which the Animal Genetic Resources is an integral part was developed
2. The Animal Genetic Resources Conservation and Research Strategy were designed.
3. Animal Genetic Resources Country Report was prepared

Workshops and Conferences

The Department has so far organized or co-organized and Sponsored/cosponsored workshops, conferences and other forums that are relevant to conservation and sustainable use of animal genetic resources of the country. Below are some of such events of national, regional and global significance.

• First Annual Conference of Ethiopian Wildlife Association, 24-25 July 2003, A.A, Ethiopia
• First Workshop of the National Consultative Committee for Preparation of the Country Report on Farm Animal Genetic Resources of Ethiopia (IBC, Addis Abeba, 6-7 Nov., 2003)
• Second Workshop of the National Consultative Committee to Review the Draft Country Report on the Farm Animal Genetic Resources of Ethiopia (IBC, Addis Abeba,10-11 May 2004) CR Report in PDF
• Conference on Farm Animal Biodiversity in Ethiopia: Status and Prospects. 11th Annual Conference of Ethiopian Society of Animal Production (EARO, Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, 28-30 August 2003)
• Workshop on Managing Animal Genetic Resources in Africa: Strategies, Priorities, Livestock Keepers’ Rights and the Way Forward (Addis Workshop, 24-25 May 2007)
• A Workshop of the National Consultative Committee on the Outcomes of the First International Technical Conference on Farm Animal Genetic Resources and the Way Forward (to be held in Dec. 2007, IBC, A.A.)

Future Plan

1. Identify the National Animal Genetic Resources Focal Point
2. Assign technical coordinator within the National Focal Point
3. Establish Nation Animal Genetic Resources Conservation and Research Advisory Committee and set expert group for Domestic, Aquatic and wild animal genetic resources independently.
4. Identify descriptors list, design forms/protocols and develop animal genetic resources assessment methodology.
5. Conduct animal genetic resources assessment surveys
6. Establish animal genetic resources management database.
7. Based on the resources assessment data, design and implement animal genetic resources maintenance and/or conservation and sustainable utilization strategies.
8. Undertake regular inventory or census of the animal genetic resources
9. Build capacity and capability in the fields of animal genetic resources characterization, conservation and sustainable use.

10. Involve the community in the area of animal genetic resources conservation and sustainable utilization.
