A project entitled “Development of Management Plan, Community-based Wildlife Conservation and Ecotourism Development in Babille Elephant Sanctuary and Adjacent Localities, Ethiopia” has been carried out by the Wildlife for Sustainable Development (WSD) in collaboration with the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA) as of March 2008.
Mountain systems, covering about 27 per cent of the world’s land surface and directly supporting 22 per cent of the world’s people, are the water towers of the world, providing for the freshwater needs of more than half of humanity. The world’s mountains encompass some of the most spectacular landscapes, a wide variety of ecosystems, a great diversity of species, and distinctive human communities.
Statistics on the most recent global food crisis are well known. In the three years leading up to June 2008, food prices rose 83%. Although declining since, they are still 60% higher than in 2006.
It is generally accepted that genetic diversity in crops is not evenly distributed across the world. Ethiopia has been recognized as among the few genetically rich areas of the world in terms of crop diversity ever since the exploration by a Russian plant collector N.I. Vavilov, in 1927.
