The Deputy Director General of the Institute of Biodiversity Conservation (IBC) welcomed all participants to the review workshop and stated that this forum will enrich the report enormously. The review workshop was opened by H.E. Dr. Tewolde Berhan G/Egziabher, Director General of Environmental Protection Authority. His excellency pointed out that the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has been established for the three main objectives, namely biodiversity conservation, sustainable utilization and Access and Benefit Sharing.

“The world is facing today a challenge on food security which resulted from the misuse of biodiversity and other factors such as climate change. Biodiversity has been for all in terms of benefits, however, due time it has become clear that for some reasons countries tend to protect their biodiversity from illegal uses such as patenting. The issues of Access and Benefit Sharing has long been challenging in its nature and parties to the convention are working hard to produce legal documents on fair and equitable sharing of the benefits resulting from the use of Biodiversity” he added.

To this end, CBD has been monitoring the implementation of the three objectives of the convention by the contracting parties using different means. This report is part of the monitoring process, hence, countries are expected to submit their reports in time though Ethiopia started late the report due to financial constraints.

The 4th country report is different from the previous three reports in that the 4th report is formulated in such a way that it will clearly show the achievements of the 2010 biodiversity targets of the CBD and will be used by the secretariat for the Third Global Biodiversity Outlook formulation.
