1.       Investigation and characterization of newly emerging diseases such as Escherichia. coli O157:H7; Shiga toxin producing

2.       Isolation and identification of bacterial species of Bacillus sphaericus for biological control of malaria.

3.       Mode of infection of Helicobacter pylori.

4.       Investigation and characterization of extremophiles in Rift Valley including Erta Ale (the Living Fire Lake in Dallol Depression).

5.       Investigation of single cell protein producing Spirulina sp.

6.       Isolation and characterization of soil bacteria which can metabolize pesticides (Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, Mycobacterium, Nocardia), hydrocarbons from petrochemical industries (Pseudomonas, Micrococcus, Corynebacterium) and detergents and effluents from the plastic industries (Pseudomonas, Methanobacterium, Methanococcus, Methanosarcina, Methanomicrobium, Methanospirillum).

7.       Investigation and identification of anaerobic digesters (Pseudomonas and methanogenic bacteria) for utilizing agricultural and industrial wastes especially sewage and distillery effluents.

8.       Isolation and identification of microbial strains (Ethiopian strains of Lactobacilli) employed for the best quality (distinctive flavor and texture) of milk products.
