NISM Project Overview

The National Information Sharing Mechanism Project, which is coordinated by the Institute of Biodiversity Conservation, has been in place since September 2006. Two workshops have been conducted on stakeholder participation, establishing national information sharing mechanism and national steering committee and stakeholders training on how to use the database application for collecting information on PGRFA. The third workshop will be conducted on May 17-18, 2007, which will mainly be evaluation of the completed database and the second country report on PGRFA. Steering committe meetings are being carried out on regular basis to facilitate the country report writing process.

The Institute has established a national coordinating committee as listed below:

1. Dr. Genene Tefera (Chairman)
2. Mr. Abiyot Berhanu (Database Manager and Webmaster)
3. Mr. Adugna Abdi (Member)
4. Mr. Getachew Berhan (Member)
5. Mrs. Feaven Workeye(Secretary)

A small working group was also established in the institute to facilitate gathering availing information on priority activities particularly concerning the national focal point (reperesenting Ethiopia) to be documented in the database system. They are:

Starbucks in Ethiopia coffee vow

Starbucks has agreed a wide-ranging accord with Ethiopia to support and promote its coffee, ending a long-running dispute over the issue.

CBD Day Celebrated

Ethiopia has colourfully celebrated the International Biodiversity day on May 22, 2007 by organizing a one day panel discussion, about the theme of the day which was " Biological diversity and Climate change". The meeting was opened by H. E. President Girma W/Giorgis, the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and held at the
ECA (Economic Commission of Africa) hall.
